With the advancement and development of modern dentistry, the use of the dental microscope in root canal treatments has become very important. With its help the practitioner can identify additional canals and thus the chances of success increase considerably. The dentist can also remove fractured root canal instruments, identify possible fractures or root fissures that compromise a root canal treatment. As treatment methods evolve, more and more tools are being developed to increase the success of the procedure, to make the dentist's work easier and to make the patient's experience in the dental chair more comfortable. Among these important tools is the dental laser.

What are the benefits of dental laser in root canal treatment?

Many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of completing root canal treatment with the dental laser. It is used in the disinfection phase of the root canals and its use under the microscope gives the doctor a better control of the disinfection of the root canal walls and increases the chances of success of the endodontic intervention.

The dental laser is an excellent adjuvant in a root canal treatment, both in the case of devitalization and in the case of retreatment (restoration of old, inadequate root canal treatments). The laser beam decontaminates the root canals through its bactericidal effect, eliminating pathogenic microorganisms which, if not removed, can cause subsequent local infections (granulomas, cysts, abscesses, etc.). What are the risks of improper root canal treatment?

Develop multiple problems:

Tooth isolation

Correct laser-assisted root canal treatment cannot be done without proper isolation of the treated tooth. In most cases this involves the use of dental dams instead of dental rolls. In this way we can ensure a very effective barrier between the canals of the treated tooth and the bacteria in the saliva and oral cavity.

Identifying channels

Before they can be treated, the opening must be found. Although it is an easy operation for a specialist (especially under the microscope), in some cases the canals are sought in the wrong places and perforations can be made which compromise or weaken the tooth.

Identifying the correct number of channels

A more common problem is missing one or more canals. This can translate into postoperative pain after the anesthesia wears off or over time because the pulp not removed from the canals becomes infected and lesions appear behind the root tip that can turn into abscess.

Incomplete root canal treatment

As in point "b", partial removal of the nerve from one or more canals can lead to the appearance of a granuloma or cyst in the tooth.

Disinfecting drains

Along with instrumentation of the canals along their entire length, this step is of major importance! This is where the laser disinfection comes in, which has been proven to kill bacteria that cannot be removed as effectively by traditional methods.

Channel instrument fracture

Occasionally it can happen that a needle is fractured in the canals. This is an accident that can occur and often does not present complications if the canal has been fully instrumented and efficiently disinfected. Even so, this accident can be avoided by a specialist who knows how to appreciate the difficulty of the case, how to manage the treatment well, has patience and uses the needles properly.
