Mind masses - when is their extraction recommended

Wisdom teeth - are permanent teeth that are increasingly rare in patients today. With human evolution, the dental arches have become smaller and this tooth has stopped erupting in the majority of the population. There are also people who do not show even the bud of growth of this tooth.

In what situations do we extract these mind masses

Among the situations in which these mind masses must be removed are:

• Their eruption in an unnatural position injures the soft tissues. In other cases, the eruption can resorbize the roots of the 12-year molar, leading to long-term extraction of both. Unfortunately, in many cases, a wisdom tooth cannot be sanitized well, being in a very backward and often upside down position. This can lead to caries, and the wisdom molar can soon develop endodontic pathology.
• In another situation, these wisdom masses may develop cystic or tumor formations from their forming sac. Impacted molars should be radiologically monitored every 6 months to 1 year.
• Another situation where wisdom tooth extraction is needed is orthodontic purposesif we have crowded teeth. When teeth are very crowded and the orthodontist has to make room, these wisdom teeth are removed. Another reason for removing them in cases of crowding is that they migrate to the center of the active mouth even at older ages, patients having relapses in crowded pathologies.
• There are also situations where the wisdom tooth is essential in a treatment plan. For example, when we have missing teeth in the molar area, this wisdom tooth may become a post in a bridge. If we have many missing teeth and we are waiting for the integration of implants, the wisdom tooth can be a good stop of the vertical dimension of the patient, preventing temporomandibular joint, muscle and ligament problems.
