What is a ceramic crown?

The ceramic crown is a prosthetic solution for the rehabilitation of a tooth destroyed by the caries process to a degree too great to benefit from a filling. The crowns are made by modern computerized milling techniques in the dental laboratory and are applied in the dental office using adhesives, with an average life expectancy of more than 15 years. Thanks to the ceramic material and the absence of metal components (present in metal-ceramic crowns), the emax ceramic crown is biocompatible with the gingiva with which it comes into direct contact, but also with the entire body.

Of all the ceramic materials currently available in dentistry, emax ceramics represent the top of the line in terms of durability, strength and esthetics far superior to other available options. The ceramics for the emax range are based on 3rd generation lithium disilicate which, in fatigability tests for the movements performed by the patient during mastication, showed impressive results.

When should you choose a ceramic crown?

All-ceramic crowns are indicated when the patient desires an esthetic and long-term solution for the restoration of a tooth destroyed by decay. Dental ceramics faithfully copy natural tooth structures and integrate best esthetically, which is why this type of crown is used for front teeth. They have another major advantage: minimal grinding of natural teeth, compared to metal-ceramic crowns.

Dental ceramics have come a long way and now you can also opt for an emax ceramic crown for lateral teeth. Another reason why your doctor may recommend such a crown is to protect a devitalized tooth that has undergone root canal treatment from potential fractures. An all-ceramic crown or an inlay-onlay partial prosthetic crown can be made, with very high strength and esthetics.

What are the steps in making an all-ceramic crown?

In the first phase, the tooth to be restored is ground with a ceramic crown or an Emax all-ceramic veneer. An impression is made with a very faithful material and then, in the dental laboratory, a model of the patient's situation can be cast. The model is digitally scanned and then the design of the future ceramic crown is computer-generated, after which it is milled robotically. These modern techniques ensure the integrity of the ceramic piece and the most faithful adaptation to the natural dental tissues, ensuring a predictable, long-term result.

Why choose a ceramic crown instead of a metal-ceramic crown?

Even if there is a price difference between the two types of crowns, this is certainly amortized over time if we think that we want a dental crown to be a long-term solution. For an Emax ceramic crown there is no gingival staining phenomenon as the metal component is missing. Also, the risk of gingival retraction is much lower, and the biocompatibility and esthetics are clearly superior.

When the tooth is restored by a prosthetic piece, the health of the tooth's supporting tissues, i.e. the health of the tooth from a periodontal point of view, must also be taken into account. Thus, a metal-ceramic crown has the great disadvantage of favoring plaque retention in the gingival cavity and maintaining a state of chronic gingival inflammation. Over time, gingival retraction occurs in that area with the following consequences: caries at the edge of the work, marked tooth sensitivity if the teeth are vital, etc. Another disadvantage of a metal-ceramic crown is the bond between the metal and ceramic, which is not very stable and thus, this type of restoration may suffer from defatization over time, i.e. chipping of the ceramic component on the metal layer.

Ceramic crown price

In order to establish a treatment plan, which includes ceramic crown restorations, it is necessary to have a correct diagnosis made by a specialist. The price of a ceramic crown restoration is reflected in the quality and precision of the work, so a patient who wants a beautiful long-term restoration should not be attracted by slogans such as "cheap dental crowns". The quality of a prosthetic work speaks for itself over time and not only in terms of dental aesthetics, but also in terms of its resistance in itself and the way it biocompatibly integrates into the oral cavity and respects both the hard and soft dental tissues, i.e. the gingiva and periodontal ligaments.

If you too are in need of restorative prosthodontic work and you opt for an Emax ceramic crown, don't hesitate to make an appointment online or by phone call to one of the 11 clinics in the country.
