Highly biocompatible dental crowns
A dental crown is intended to restore or completely replace the crown of a tooth, but also to increase its strength over time, in case the tooth becomes sensitive.
When is dental crown treatment recommended?
One cause for which a tooth may require treatment with a dental crown is an extensive carious process which, by simple filling treatment (filling), does not provide sufficient strength to the tooth.
Another situation that may require indication for a dental crown is tooth loss, followed by the insertion of a dental implant. A dental crown is attached to the implant (which is an artificial root) to restore the morphology and functionality of the tooth.
Dental crowns made from body-safe materials
Dental crowns made of metal alloys, even in combination with ceramics, have an unsightly appearance and can cause sensitivity or even allergies in the patient. Heavy metals are not the first choice when it comes to dental crowns. We recommend that our patients have their sensitivity to certain dental materials tested before receiving dental treatments that utilize them.
It is important to realize that dental materials are placed in our body, where they will remain for a long period of time, years or perhaps for the rest of our lives. These dental materials are not completely inert, as one might think, but influence the physiology of the body to a greater or lesser extent, depending on their composition, quantity, etc.
To understand this even better, we can give the example of "dental tattoos", which are dark areas of gingiva around a tooth with a metal dental crown (or post, or other reconstruction). These areas are formed by the migration of metal ions into the gum tissue. Metal ion migration, however, can also occur without any clinical signs to alarm the patient, with the risk of heavy metal deposits in certain tissues of the body. These migrations may be potentiated by the presence in the same oral cavity of metal alloy-containing dental work together with amalgam fillings (containing mercury), which generates a galvanic stack phenomenon that pumps metal ions into the body.
In Life Dental Spa clinics, we choose to recommend safe and compatible dental materials for our patients!
Types of materials for a dental crown
Zirconia dental crown
Zirconia is a fairly recent material that has revolutionized dental practice. It has exceptional properties related to aesthetics and strength, so it can be successfully used for dental crowns. Zirconia is a white colored material, in the form of blocks of various shapes and sizes, which can be milled computerized to obtain a dental crown with a very precise adaptation to the level of the ground tooth.
Pure zirconia is not used in dentistry, but a chemically obtained combination of zirconia called zirconium oxide or zirconia. Thus, zirconia is considered to be one of the most resistant materials from which dental crowns can be made, apart from metal.
All-ceramic dental crown
All-ceramic is another material that allows the realization of highly esthetic dental crowns, with optical properties similar to natural tooth structures. All-ceramic can perfectly imitate the shade, texture and translucency of the natural tooth, resulting in a dental crown with exceptional appearance, especially on teeth visible in the smile, where the aesthetic requirements are extremely high.
Crowns made of all-ceramic are re wear-resistant, but can be more brittle than metal or composite crowns. They can break or crack under high pressure.
Stages of making biocompatible dental crowns
It is very important how the tooth is ground, how well the impression is taken, as well as the precision of the laboratory realization, in order to obtain correct, airtight prosthetic works, which do not irritate the gingiva and are harmoniously integrated into the occlusion (bite). We know that a dental crown that is not properly adapted to the ground tooth can generate gum inflammation, periodontal pockets, can be retentive for food debris and bacteria, can favor the appearance of caries on the tooth that is not properly covered.
- The tooth is prepared, impressed and covered with a temporary dental crown made in the office;
- In the dental laboratory, the crown is made by digital design and computerized milling;
- The dental crown will then be cemented onto the prepared tooth.
