Laser gingivitis treatment

Although common, gingivitis is often ignored in terms of diagnosis and treatment, both by patients and by some dentists. Initially manifested by bleeding when brushing and inflammation, untreated gingivitis can develop into a more serious condition.

Chronic marginal periodontitis (periodontitis) frequently leads to tooth loss. But if detected and treated early, gingivitis is completely reversible, so the patient can be cured of the condition. The same cannot be said for periodontitis, where treatments are aimed at stopping the disease or slowing its progression.

For this reason, it is very important to educate patients, so that they should go to the dentist from the first signs. Treatment for gingivitis should be instituted as quickly as possible to maximize the chances of recovery.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is bacterial inflammation of the gum tissue. Patients frequently complain of gum pain, inflamed gums, red or even reddish-violet gums, gingival papillae enlargement, sometimes with the appearance of a gingival polyp, bleeding when brushing or chewing, unpleasant mouth odor, etc.

The patient may discover these changes in the gums on their own, so the next step would be to seek a consultation with a dentist for diagnosis and treatment. Unfortunately, however, patients often put off visiting the dentist, believing that these symptoms are temporary and unimportant. Under these conditions, gingivitis can develop chronically and turn into periodontitis, which is more difficult to treat.

gingivitis treatment

Basically, bacteria that initially inflame only the gums, if not eliminated in time, can cause deep-seated destruction by affecting the supporting structures of the teeth and in particular the alveolar bone. These bacteria cause bone lysis, i.e. the destruction of the supporting bone, leaving the teeth unsupported and mobile. From here to their loss is only one step.

In order to differentiate gingivitis from periodontitis and to determine the exact stage of the disease, a panoramic X-ray is very helpful. This investigation gives the doctor all the necessary information showing whether or not there is bone destruction. Once bone resorption has occurred, the diagnosis will be periodontitis and not gingivitis.

We can thus consider gingivitis to be the precursor phase of periodontitis, but with a high chance of complete healing after treatment, if diagnosed in time.

Causes of gingivitis

The main cause of this condition is pathogenic bacteria.

Favoring factors for the installation and development of bacterial populations at gingival level are represented by:

  • poor hygiene with lack of regular brushing or superficial brushing;
  • lack of interdental hygiene (mouth shower, dental floss);
  • Large amounts of tartar build-up on tooth surfaces and lack of regular scaling at 6 months;
  • poor diet, rich in sugar and simple carbohydrates, which are an important energy substrate for bacteria;
  • smoking;
  • stress, which weakens the body's immunity and makes it more vulnerable to bacterial invasion;
  • hormonal changes such as pregnancy, puberty, menopause;
  • certain important nutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin C deficiency;
  • taking certain medicines;;
  • certain diseases that weaken the immune system (HIV, leukemia, diabetes, etc);
  • the presence of old work, incorrectly fitted fillings that irritate the gums and retain food debris.

How is gingivitis diagnosed at Life Dental Spa?

We consider the intraoral camera consultation to be extremely useful for both the doctor and the patient, because it helps the former to explain the dental status using the images, and the patient to visualize and become aware of his dental problems.

If the diagnosis is confirmed by the signs and symptoms, but also radiologically, then a treatment plan is proposed to the patient which contains both the necessary dental work and the related costs.

For a certain diagnosis a dental consultation is necessary, which in our clinic includes:

For a certain diagnosis a dental consultation is necessary, which in our clinic includes:

Anamnesis

patient history and medical history;

Consult clinic

to check for bleeding, the presence of inflamed gums, the appearance of the gums (color, volume), the presence of tartar;

Intraoral camera consultation

providing details that may not be visible to the naked eye, images that are also accessible to the patient in real time on the dental unit monitor;

Radiological investigation

radiologic investigation (usually panoramic X-ray), if there are no contraindications (e.g. in pregnancy).

Laser gingivitis treatment at Life Dental Spa

Our approach is different in that we take a holistic view, which means that we do not only treat the effects, but we also consider the causes of the problem, which need to be eliminated. In addition, our patients are educated about post-treatment care to avoid relapse.

The actual treatment of gingivitis is represented by the BIOPARO® protocol, which includes the use of dental laser, at this time being the most effective and with the best long-term results.

Before the laser treatment, a professional hygienization procedure is performed, including professional scaling, brushing and air-flow.

Some treatments for gingivitis also involve operations such as gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, which in our clinic is also performed with laser.

For those looking for solutions for periodontal diseases (gum infection, inflamed gums, gum recession, gingivitis), dental laser is currently the most modern and effective method.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the risks of laser treatment for gingivitis?

The dental laser is a gentle and safe technology even for children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. In pregnancy, for example, the incidence of gingivitis is very high and dental lasers can be an excellent treatment option with very good results.

Laser treatment of gingivitis decreases or completely eliminates the need for anesthesia, so it is even more recommended for children and pregnant women.

Very important in our approach is to educate the patient in order to maintain the long-term result after treatment. We believe that it is the patient's unhealthy habits that have made him or her ill, so they need to be replaced with new, beneficial ones that will sustain his or her health.

For this reason, the patient receives at the end of the treatment a whole list with recommendations for dental hygiene, diet, nutritional supplements, etc., in order to prevent relapse.

Very important is also the medical follow-up following the treatment, including regular check-ups and professional hygiene. In principle, at least one airflow every 3 months and ultrasonic scaling and professional brushing every 6 months are recommended.

We also recommend a laser procedure to prevent relapse in periodontal diseases, both gingivitis and periodontitis, called Laser Mouth Disinfection. This procedure eliminates the possible bacterial populations that may occur after treatment for gingivitis, so that there is a safe maintenance of periodontal balance.
