Tooth decay occurs when the enamel and dentin soften under the action of acid attack and a cavity is produced. Once it has passed the enamel, the decay progresses more quickly through the dentin and reaches the pulp, causing inflammation and infection of the nerve. There are several types of decay, depending on where they are established.

There are patients who have higher or lower karyoactivity , depending on:

  • The structure of the enamel - a demineralized enamel will be more easily "attacked" - it will decay faster.
  • Diet - plays a very important role in the appearance of cavities, a diet low in raw fruits and vegetables will favor the development of the caries process.
  • Reflux diseases , gastric acid returning to the oral cavity, lead to consistent erosion of the enamel.
  • Xerostomia (dry mouth), caused by certain conditions or medications, leads to decreased salivary flow and, implicitly, to the appearance of cavities.

What types of cavities can we encounter?

1. Coronal caries – Involves the occlusal or interdental surface of the tooth, found in both children and adults.

2. Root Caries – As we age, gingival recession occurs, exposing the root, leaving it exposed and more susceptible to decay. Cementum – the covering layer of the root – is less hard than enamel, so incipient decay will progress more quickly.

3. Secondary cavities – They form between the tooth and the filling.

4. Recurrent cavities – They form under fillings or dental crowns (can be detected on a dental x-ray). In these areas, a lot of bacterial plaque accumulates, which, if not removed, leads to cavities.

Caries treatment

Now you have a new way to get rid of toothache, no matter what type of tooth decay you suffer from – laser dental treatments . Whether it is incipient or deep cavities, the laser has the ability to remove all the affected tissue, without causing pain. It is a safe procedure for any age group, without requiring anesthesia or other interventions. Even pregnant women can benefit from this treatment, without affecting the fetus.

What can you do to prevent these types of cavities from occurring?

1. The simplest method is good and complete daily dental hygiene;

2. Regular check-ups with your dentist and cleaning every 6 months, thus being able to detect any cavities at an early stage.

3. A diet low in carbohydrates and sugar, and rich in fiber, especially raw fruits and vegetables.

4. Sealing a simple, non-invasive, laser-assisted method. Aiming to cover the occlusal grooves on molars and premolars.

In conclusion, tooth brushing remains the safest method of prevention, but done correctly and twice a day. Along with periodic check-ups.
